We are happy to announce our GO Scholar Scholarship programme.
GO Scholar is an academic scholarship programme which supports young people’s academic ambitions through strategic financial support. This is a multifaceted project that is designed to tailor support to individual young person. We will begin by supporting identified young people from disadvantaged backgrounds with their final secondary school exam (WAEC) fees which is the equivalent of GCSEs in the UK. We will further support beneficiaries with their university entry exams (JAMB) fees
Background - In Nigeria, secondary school students pay an examination fee for their final exams which is the equivalent of GCSEs in the UK. The exam fees and administrative cost per student is about N15,000 (£35). As small as this might be to some of us, many families are unable to afford this fee. Some families end up taking high interest loans for the sole purpose of paying exam fees for their children.
We will be working closely with Principals and Vice Principals to select young people for the scholarship between October and November. We have had initial conversations with some Principals and Vice Principals in Abeokuta and will be extending these conversations to principals in other areas of Ogun State. For this pilot, we anticipate paying exam fees for about 20 beneficiaries as soon as exam registration starts before Christmas.
George Washington Carver once said that “Education is the key that unlocks the golden door to freedom.” I believe God has put us in the position to unlock the golden doors for some of these young people through GO Scholar.
